Didn't anyone bother to watch this video? I thought it was pretty cool. But I got no replies to it, nor any sanctions for it. And here I thought I would titillate the homies. Come one, homies, weigh in a bit! This is right up your alley -- highbrow, intellectually sophisticated rap. :-)

Ted wrote, "You left off the cee."

What is that supposed to mean?

Sorry, Robert. That's what I get for not spending more time on RoR. I should learn to check the history before posting. Thanks for letting me know.

Ted,

Would you mind being a little more explanatory in your posts, out of simple respect for other people's knowledge and understanding. They can't all be expected to know what you know, and if they indicate that they don't, they warrant more than a single word "explanation." Sheesh!

One more time -- what in the hell is C-rap, if you don't mind my asking! :-/

I don't see how this is so difficult to get.

"Come one, homies, weigh in a bit! This is right up your alley -- highbrow, intellectually sophisticated rap"

should have read:

"Come one, homies, weigh in a bit! This is right up your alley -- highbrow, intellectually sophisticated crap."

But you left off the cee.

And, of course, it wasn't intellectually sophisticated "crap." It was a very well-done video, which was evidently created by the Economics Department at George Mason U.

Evidently we disagree. The fact that one approves of the message doesn't make the "art" good art. In this case I would say the "art" and the message are much the worse off for each other. And I happen to seriously doubt that those who think that this is in any way "good" rap are actual fans of the genre. Actual fans of hip hop are more likely to see this as a parody of an art form they respect than as an homage to the form. As for the educational merit, just imagine Johns Hopkins offering a class in hip hop heart bypass surgery.

Nothing personal, Ted, but then you would probably hate nerdcore then. To each their own, I guess.

Hate? Who said anything about hate? This video doesn't rise to anywhere near that level. Had its admirers said they thought this video was worth indulging as "cute" rather than praising as "good" that would be a different question. Let me know when you put this on your ipod and dance to it, or play it in in celebration of the next Fed rate hike.

"Nerdcore"? Why not Gwar? I am suspicious of any genre that requires a motivation external to the quality of its own music to motivate its listeners. Not that this video rises to that level.

This is much better, but still works as comedy, not art. My two and four year old nephews love it.

A. On another forum, I said that is was, indeed "cute."

B.  Having watched it a couple more times, I raise that to "artistic" because it captures the essentials of the two viewpoints.

C.  Thanks, Bridget, for the mention of "nerdcore."  I had no idea that it existed.  Wikipedia was most helpful.

Those, of course, are parodies, rather than original creations about computers, Star Trek, Star Wars, and other nerdly topics.  BTW, last night, after one of my geography classes (GEOG 582: Remote Sensing) we discussed the sheer primitivism of Saddam Hussein who had the fifth largest army in the world, but no satellites.  We compared him to Noonian Singh Khan, the 20th Century Man Who Thinks in Two Dimensions.  We also reflected on the fact that such being true the massing of Iraqi troops on the Kuwaiti border must have been obvious to those who cared enough to drag the USA into a war to replace the Cold War. ... but I digress...

William Dwyer: You will have to forgive Ted his hubris. He probably thinks you are just like him in every way.  He would stop in at your house at 9:00 PM on Wednesday night and be shocked to discover that you are not watching the TV program he was expecting.  Tuning it in for you, he would also expect you to recognize the actors, and to converse with him about their previous roles.

And to close on-topic. The Keynes-Hayek video tosses out very many sight gags.  Did you notice that coming out of the hotel, Hayek holds a MetroCard for the subway.  Frugal.
