Senator Reid should be called what he is - a thug... a morally degenerate walking pile of excretement which should be  composted, then buried underground...

Good article!

As regards a contract fee, I think that one should have a right to make written contracts without having to pay a fee. But in that case, one cannot expect one's contracts to be enforced. If one wants them enforced, then one should be willing to pay a fee and not expect the service to be provided free of charge. That being the case, most people would be willing to pay for the service as a kind of insurance against being ripped off with no legal recourse.

So if everything that the government does is paid for by voluntary "taxation", and one is free to pick a competing provider for government services, so long as they live by either a common legal code or one of several legal codes each of which has agreed to a way of resolving differences between the codes for their subscribers -- is that anarcho-capitalism? And is that theoretically obtainable, if enough people desired it?

My answer is available in the long essay I wrote for Machan/Long, Anarchy/Minarchy, Is Government Part of a Free Country? (Ashgate, 2007).

Concerning the contract insurance idea:

I recall in Capitalism: the Unknown Ideal, Rand discusses this as idea. She seems bent on making it clear that it is mere speculation on a formidable objective. This rare moment when she is just throwing something out there is curious. I've wondered if, while thinking it was a clever eye-opener, she thought it flawed or ineffectual.

Sounds like a fine idea to me. Any Thoughts?

My article on "Dissolving the Problem of Public Goods..." in my The Libertarian Reader (Rowman & Littlefield 1982) develops Rand's idea.
