| | The African students I've met at university are so much smarter than the African American students, it isn't even funny. Now these African students are pure black, whereas the African American students are largely mixed, with white ancestry as well as black. Must be those white genes that are holding them down.

Seriously, if you read Tom Sowell, he makes a good case that the dysfunctionality of the African American underclass has its origins in the cracker or redneck culture of the Old South, many of whose members came from the towns bordering England and Scotland. These were an irresponsible, violent, pugnacious, grandiose, range-of-the moment people who would kill you if you looked at them wrongly or "dissed" them. Sowell says that that the African American underclass inherited these cultural traits originally from their white redneck brethren. See his book Black Rednecks and White Liberals.
