Linz, thanks for the encouragement. As you can imagine, I am often frustrated for lack of proper expressions in certain occasions. Fortunately one can always look to Ozzies or Kiwis for inspiration!

Well, Hong, I'm learning Kiwi right along with you.

The idiom "to take the piss out of" (to mock or make fun of) is a new one for me, but my Dr. friend seems to like it quite a lot, so I learned quickly.  ;)

Just be glad you don't have to interpret the accent and differentiate between "six" and "sex," as it can add quite a bit of confusion to a given conversation.  ;)

Ha!!

George: "While my nation is engaged in a titanic struggle with one the most evil and inhumane foes in recorded history, this 'impolite and ridiculous' New Zealander has shown more love and concern†for my nations young warriors than many (if not most)†of its own citizens."

Correct.

Anthony: "The ISIL is one of the oldest libertarian organizations around, with origins going back to the 1960s. It has reached millions of people with pamphlets and literature, and has gotten free-market books into authoritarian countries and Communist societies. The amount of good done by this fine organization cannot be overstated. To call its members evil is pure bull. :

Correct.

It's not either/or, Soloists. One can -- and I do -- recognize Linz's achievements, and still be angry with his denunciations of such people as Chris Sciabbara and Vince Miller as" Saddamites." Fair is fair -- both toward Lindsay and toward those whom he denounces.

Sigh.

This is not about Chris Sciabarra. I paid Chris a very generous tribute at the end of my last post on the Iraq War. But I was blunt in my view, because it *is* my view, that his policy offers succour to Saddam. But no one is further from my mind when I speak generically of "Saddamites." Chris remains assistant-editor of the FreeRad & a highly valued friend.

Nor is this about Vince Miller, whom I've never mentioned, at all, ever. I have personal reasons for having no respect for him, but this thread is not concerned with those.

Whatever the ISIL once was, it is now a haven for Saddamites & other varieties of America-bashers. The worst instance of that was shown above, in the article calling on Pres. Bush to mourn for car-bombers & beheaders, euphemistically referred to as "insurgents."

It don't come much more evil than that.

Yes, Linz, this is about Chris, and Vince Miller, and Tibor, and all the other decent and honorable people who disagree with you -- and with me -- about the conduct of the war. So long as you call them "Saddamites," you cannot logically exclude them from the fire and brimstone you bring down upon the heads of the other antiwar people. It means nothing to say you exclude them; in reason you cannot, unless you prefer to say they're too stupid to know what they're doing.

By implication, you are asking me to do something Ayn Rand once asked me to do, and I refused: to fly in the face of everything I know about the good will and good sense of old friends and to decide, on the basis of a present disagreement, that they are not the people I always knew them to be. I refuse again.

If I were Chris, or Tibor, or Matthew, and a friend called me, say, a Nazi, but hastened to add that I was a person of good will, I would feel deeply offended, profoundly hurt, and as if I were completely invisible to that friend.

Barbara - *I* am not asking *you* to do anything.

You are free to register your disagreement, as you have.

I am free to disagree with your disagreement, as I do.

Succouring Saddam, inadvertently or intentionally, is something I take the dimmest possible view of, especially while the boys & girls are on the battlefield. It is cosmically more serious than umbrage. If Chris & Tibor wish to terminate their friendship with me, that's their prerogative. As it happens, I haven't detected any sign that they wish to do so. I think they both know that in all other respects I hold them in the highest esteem. I have publicly rooted for both of them. (In the case of Tibor I have devoted an entire FreeRad editorial to lamenting his under-appreciated, unsung hero status.) But I will not forfeit my integrity in order to avoid hurting their - or anybody's - feelings when something much larger than anyone's feelings is at stake. That is what *you* are asking *me* to do.

I refuse.

And I shall have nothing to add to this.

Barbara,

I, too disagree with you & Lindsay about the war in Iraq - for which I am labelled a Saddamite by Lindsay.

Perhaps I'm just a callous bugger, but I've made my position clear to Lindsay, & thereafter the whole Saddamite-labelling issue has ceased to concern me. The brimstone is but a balm, & the plummetting rocks like the gentlest of falling rain :-)

I can't speak for anyone else in a similar position (e.g. Chris) but when compared to the benefits of Lindsays company & communication, being lambasted along with the wrongheaded anti-war people is a relatively minor issue.

In fact, in drawing comparisons between Rand & Lindsay on this issue, you're ignoring one thing - neither myself, Chris, nor other anti-Iraq-war Objectivists have been 'excommunicated' from SOLO. My guess is that if we'd tried arguing in the same way with Rand as we do with Lindsay (e.g. my semi-inebriated rant about the issue the last time we met), we'd have been kicked out on our arses ages ago.

I think it's to Lindsay's credit that he can feel so passionately about an issue, and about our position on it, & yet treat that disagreement in a wider context.

Without wishing to seem harsh, I think it bothers you more than it bothers me :-)

Yours,
Duncan

Duncan, you may be right that Lindsay's attitude bothers me more than it does you. That's because I'm not personally involved, but friends I care about are involved, and it's important for me to defend them. I could not happily live with myself if I saw them being abused, and said nothing.

I just unsubscribed myself from FND. Not because of their Iraq coverage but because the latest edition contained a link to a news report about the recent murder of Robert McCartney in Northern Ireland. The IRA terrorist organisation made an offer to the McCartney family to kill the individuals responsible (some of whom are apparently IRA members). The family rejected the offer, insisted that they want justice, not revenge. FND's editors have inserted their own comments into the section they quoted in FND (at the time of writing this post it's the 8th item down the page here) implying that the family had rejected justice by rejecting the IRA offer, that the Police Service of Northern Ireland is an illegitimate organisation and that the British government are occupying Northern Ireland.

I'm not going to condemn the entire ISIL organisation as evil, but the opinions of the FND editors on this issue suggest a quite unpalatable degree of context dropping.

Is he still around? Didn't I tell him to fuck off ages ago? Oh well, if I ban him now, George, I'll have to ban you also for agreeing with him. Don't know if I could bear such a wrench.

Though if you truly can't bare it any more I guess you're no use to man, woman or bear.
