Pitt as John Galt. Angelina as Dagny. Hmm.

Pitt ~ Gulch. And Jolie rhymes with Dagny -- any other commensurabilities?

...and Paul Bettany as Ragnar...

Paul was already the ship's doctor Stephen Maturin in Master and Commander. He'd be great in breeches! Ooops, forgot the era of AS.... ;-^

Sam,

Banderas is a bit long in the tooth, wouldn't you say?

You may be right about Banderas ... 46 years old. If the film is to be coherent with the novel the characters must have the right ages relative to each other.

Nevertheless Banderas has the elan, verve, ethnicity and dashing personality for Fransisco.

Antonio is perfect, I think.  They can use younger actors for the other scenes before they are adults in any case.  I think these two are good choices.

I'll believe this movie when I see it.  People in show business, on either side of the camera, need publicity to make a living, and one way they get it is by announcing the most tentative prospects as done deals.  The Atlas projects that have come and gone since 1972 are cases in point.

Regardless of who plays in any screen version, I've said before, the makers ought to stay with the circa-1940 streamline moderne period of the book (see the current cover art) rather than try to update it.

I think the multi-talented and younger Hugh Jackman would be a much better Francisco d'Anconia.

For some real fun, lets start casting the Assholes!
for starters Tom Arnold for Orren Boyle.  Who wants to try Jim Taggart?

I just started a new thread for casting suggestions, folks. Why don't we archive these ideas in one place?

Fox news just had an item about the forthcoming movie on their G-Block. They featured a big picture of the cover to AS and mentioned Pitt and Jolie as stars.

This is getting lots of exposure!

When this movie is shown here in Santa Fe the locals will fall all over themselves in trashing it.

I agree Sam that Banderas has the right 'feel'.

Yeah, Christopher Walken for Dr. Stadler would be great, although his performances, IMO, are spotty — but he can be wonderful.

Hugh Laurie (House) could be good, too.

How about Tony Shaloub for James Taggart?

Casting, schmasting.  You can do all that with a computer.  I like the spin on Edward Hopper's The Diner with James Dean, Marlin Monroe, and Humphrey Bogart.  With computers, you can have everyone playing anyone.  Spencer Tracy as Judge Narragansett... Mike Hoy of Loompanics once upon a time suggested Dustin Hoffman for The Wet Nurse.

No, I am thinking of MUSIC!  What do you want for the score, the soundtrack?
How about Bonnie Tyler singing "Hero." Since everyone in the world know the song, the lyrics would be overkill and the John Galt Line scene should be shown with just the music. It already has the railroad engine sound in it. Try it yourself.

Years and years ago, when I first read Atlas, my history teacher -- in high school; she was only 10 years older than us, and tall and blonde and we worshipped her and I actually danced with her at a prom -- who also read it told me that Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto was one of Rand's favorite and indeed it is mentioned in The Fountainhead.  The Russianism of that work is appropriate to Rand's mindset and I have read and re-read Atlas while listening to that.

Other works for reading Atlas have included Tschaikovsky's Fifth Symphony.

How about the set design, the artistic style?  About a year ago, I wrote up Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. (See http://rebirthofreason.com/Forum/Movies/0094.shtml)  Suits Atlas, do you not agree?

Anyone here know Jefferson Starship's Hyperdrive?  It is an anthem.

I like Kraftwerk -- and industrial music in general.
