Hi, I and a friend of mine, is having a discussion whether or not it is right by xcowboy2 to make his movies using material from atlas shrugged like this speech whit out asking ayn rand institute for permission.

He says he should always ask first no matter. And in this case where he has copied the speech from the book he should have asked first.

I on the other hand have understood it like this: that the Ayn Rand Institute wants to spread the good message, using the means one have, and that it is alright as long as it is done right. He have promoted both objectivism and the book through his movies, he have not copied any major material, only a piece of the book, but an important piece nonetheless.

I was wondering what you people thought about the matter.

Salutations from Norway, the backwards country.

Thanks, that explained a lot :D

Another few things that is both scary and a bit funny about the Norwegians, is that they believe Norway is the best country in the world to live in, because the UN said so, so then it got to be true, after all the UN is the worlds most righteous and honest organization.

And the US Liberals are called right wing in Norway, lol.

Our Financial minister have proudly and publicly declared that when it comes to economy she is clueless, and that was before she was voted in, and placed in charge of Norways treasury :D.

As I said before, Norway where everything is backwards.

Ken,

I don't know very much about Norway, but one Norwegian who certainly didn't get anything backwards was the wonderul Edvard Grieg.  If your country could live up to his musical expression, it would be a paradise.

Like you, I am enjoying the This is John Galt Speaking video series.  Have you seen the John Galt Oath Challenge?  I hope you'll be part of it; I'd like to hear it spoken with a Norwegian accent!  Or better yet, translated into your native tongue!  I don't know exactly how Richard (xcowboy2) plans to use the recordings he gets, but I think it'd be cool if it started off with a lot of English speakers, then English with accents, then in foreign languages, as if the ideas are spreading across cultures.

Hi, yes fortunately we have had some exceptions, but they are getting farther and farther between.
Our Constitution which is based on the same as the US constitution except for the part prohibiting blasphemy, has been ignored several times, it started with centralizing all the power in one place instead of separating it as was in the constitution, after that it has slowly but surely been picked apart.
The oil that Norway is so proud of was expropriated from American companies who did all the job finding it and started pumping it up and processing it.
One of our former prime ministers, who is now in the UN, has gone on public declaring that anyone who voice an opinion other than that of the IPCC is immoral.
The red party, the communist party and the Socialist Left is getting increased support.
What has happened is that more and more Socialism have been introduced slowly over the decades, so that most people haven't noticed it.
Private schools is only allowed if the government approves of their program.
Schools are in reality completely under government control, and already in kindergarten, kids have been and are thought to be good socialists.
Communism is blossoming in the universities, by then most have been indoctrinated.
Lately things have not been moving so slowly, they have been accelerating more and more.

John Fredriksen finally got tired of the government wanting more and more and did as many did before and afer him, he changed his nationality and removed his bussiness from Norway.

My own plan and that of some of my friends and my cousin is to build up a capital, get a job in the US and finally emigrate, while we still can.

What did you learn from your report Theresa :D.

I knew you were going to ask me that, Ken.

I wish I could remember, but I wrote it over 40 years ago.   I do remember writing about Norway's tundra, though!

Ken, perhaps you've seen it, but I recently posted a thread in the banter forum regarding Norway:
http://rebirthofreason.com/Forum/Banter/0240.shtml

Can you offer any insight or validity to the claim that Norway is largely an Atheist nation?

RG: Um... did anybody have any thoughts on the video?
I think that we are all fairly enthusiastic about the entire project and aside from Wow! and Thanks! there is not much more to be said.  It would be uncouth to criticize the work, not that couth is in abundance.  I prefer not to complain about the movie you did not make. I feel that one should show about the same level of competence at something before offering what they would have done if they had done what you did... which they did not...

Since you asked: I am not a military kind of guy.  I chose to not see 300.  You showed hoplites, citizen soldiers.  For myself, your well-greaved Achaians were Socrates in bronze.  What I like about the Greeks is that when faced with overwhelming odds they gathered their electrum coins, got into their boats and rowed away.  Not everyone here shares my mercantile sentiments.

You're the second person to bring that up. I didn't really do what I wanted to do with the virtues. My original idea was to animate them as constellations- you know, like the heroes of myth. I had a version that used statues of the gods- but trying to find one for each virtue was impossible. None of the greek gods are particularly noble in the Objectivist sense. Statues were too, well, static. I came across some footage of greek soldiers and all I saw was that the symbol on the sheilds was an upside down 'V'. Working on a section titled 'Value and Virtue' this seemed fortuitious. I decided at the end of about a 20 hour two-part weekend marathon editing session to just go with that and see how it came out. Once I was dealing with martial images, reason purpose and self esteem became, poetically, helmet, sword and shield.

I was very happy with the result until someone questioned the war images and I thought about it- was I saying "virtue is war" or was I saying "virtues are your armor for any difficult acheivement"- I thought I was saying the latter, but people keep inferring the former.

It didn't help when I discovered that the upside down "V" was the symbol of Sparta not Athens. I added a disclaimer to the editor's note shortly after.

I guess I'm wondering- does it bother people? Do they see what I see? I meant to demonstrate a muscular, virile and active set of virtues. For two reasons: 1) Galt is not Jesus. His virtues are not for the meek and mild but for the purposeful and confident & 2) Galt is at war with the looters and the speech is essentially an incitement to rebel.

What images would Galt have actually chosen to illustrate Reason Purpose and Self esteem? Anything specifically Greek that goes with the theme of the section (and the chronology of the series- Im slowly walking through time from the dinosaurs to the present)?

Thoughts?

PS- if anyone is in NY run- don't walk- to see "The Farnsworth Invention" on Broadway. In a future Objectivist society it will be considered one of the great plays of our time. Friday night I wept and led the ovation afterwards.

RG: "My original idea was to animate them as constellations- you know, like the heroes of myth."

That would have been cool.  Perseus is a good story.  He gets help from Athena and Hermes, rides the winged horse, slays the monster.  Virgo, Lyra, Bootes, the Centaur and the Argonautica are in the sky as well.

As I said, I mention it only because you asked.  For myself, you work stands well on its own merits.  I cannot thank you enough for your hard work.

Mike M.
PS. I went back and watched Part 9 again and really I cannot fault it for the Spartans (Lacedamonians hence the Lambdas on the shields) and the statues were fine and I really like the archaic period runner.  The wilderness sounds Huey Long and all the rest the entire montage was all very skillful and masterly.
