I applaud you for the way you handled the situation.
Contrarily, I once worked with a Jehovah's Witness and studied her religion with her for 7 years (on the weekends, at work). Because of childlike curiosity, I was willing to read just about everything she gave me. We worked together in a health food store and there was often a full hour where the store was empty of customers. There is only so much "front & face" (turning and pulling vitamin bottles forward) that you can do in a store and that left us a lot of free time. After our "sessions" -- where we often looked into booklets picturing a future Earth where lions play with gazelle (instead of brutally killing them for food) -- she would ask me and I repeatedly answered back to her: "I am not persuaded." She was persistent and it was actually kind of cute. She was an old lady and I didn't try to teach her "new tricks."
Here in Texas last week, some young pioneers (young boys in that religion have to "pioneer" for 2 years, as a rite of passage) dressed up in black and white suits were approaching me. I smiled a piercing smile at them which said:
I know who you are and what you are doing. I got a look of recognition back from the older one and he motioned to the others to just move on. It was at the end of my day's work and maybe I didn't look like I could be bothered to talk about a primitive philosophy at the time.
