I wrote:
Andy, the photograph Adam posted looks like a chunky version of Rowan Atkinson -- not you.
Andrew B Postema chuckled:
I had to laugh when reading through this and noticing the adjective "chunky" being used to describe me.
On second look, I suppose the term "buff" rather than "chunky" would more aptly describe your physique, after all.  Welcome to SOLO!

Welcome to our little club, Mr. Postema.  I'm the Andy Postema you have been accused of being.  It's not that much of an insult once you get to know me. ;-)  I am curious about one thing.  Occasionally I'm asked if I played professional baseball.  I haven't.  By any chance are you the Andy Postema who was in the minor leagues?

Luke, ask any female: The appropriate term is "beefy."

Welcome Andrew P. #2.  Is this thread indexed already?? How did you find it?

Teresa,

I sent an apology to the second Andy Postema, and included the URL of this thread.

(Edited to correct the spelling of "Teresa.")

Wow, Teresa, I almost used the term "beefy" but thought it still sounded too much like "chunky."  I will remember your clarification!

Just to check your statement, I did Google searches on "beefy hunk" and "buff hunk" and both seemed to yield more gay than straight hits.  Hmmmmmm...  I guess they can both apply to either persuasion.

A check with the dictionary -- you did expect me to check a dictionary, did you not? -- said buff means "having a physique enhanced by bodybuilding exercises" while beefy means "heavily and powerfully built."  By contrast, chunky means "short and thick or broad."

Perhaps our new Mr. Postema can join the SOLO Fitness forum and share his knowledge with us.

Andy,

Yes, but no relation to Pam Postema, former minor league umpire. Ever get asked that one?

Since mistaken identity is rampant, I'll take your articulation and attribute it to me. ;)

As far as I know, Bean is not immediate family.

Well,  I guess I have an evil twin too... or not so evil, depending on what you are into.  Mine is at katdaddy.com

Honestly, I think Andy looks more like Andy than Bean.  I can see how they could be mixed up.

Preaching Sermon on the Mount? I guess it might have looked that way.

Oh well, do onto others as you would have them do onto you.

Hey!

Has anybody noticed that this seems to be a sort of version of "Judge and prepare to be judged" if looked at from the right angle?

(chasing that little kid inside me off for the moment until the heat dies down...)

Might I recommend some of you take a look at the sanction page. You will be more successful in encouraging Mr. Andy B. Postema to stick around by making insightful posts than by allowing him to by-pass the moderation system.

Welcome to Solo, Mr. Postema. Do you have any questions about the place or about Objectivism?

Am I the only one who has picked up on the fact that Andy B. Postema is fictitious - not really the person whose picture was posted - and you are all being had?

What's the likelihood that you find an image on the web that mistakenly seems to look a bit like a Soloist, but it isn't and he has no real connection to Objectivism

...And then he coincidentally joins our list a day or two later?

Interesting idea Phil. It doesn't seem to unreasonable to me that this Andy would post here so soon, especially since Adam emailed him. He messaged me about something that a Solo veteran wouldn't, which points me towards the conclusion that this new Andy is not impersonating.

Maybe he messaged me to trick me as well? ; )

I think he is Ayn.  No doubt about it.  I never believed ARI's story that she was deceased.

Welcome to my nightmare. About once a month, for the past several years, I receive letters from various autograph fans. The letters include SASE's w/ index cards. Apparently there was a player by my name that had a brief, non-descript career in the majors (Detroit? I fergit). I ignored them for a good while, but then I got repeat requests. The situation hit its peak earlier last year when I was given a comp subscription to a magazine for retired ML players.

Recently, I have taken the time to respond back, explaining that my baseball career consisted of playing left field (go figure) for one season of Little League when I was ten, for a team in NJ called Bernard's Sporting Goods.

Apparently, I was somewhat of a needed lynchpin in order to complete various collections. I considered giving them what they wanted to relieve their suffering (requiring a small gratuity fee) but I thought otherwise of this, which was purely a rationalization for my greed.

rde
Just what I need, one more task.

Phil,

You make me sick.  You preach on and on about civility, and then without evidence you deny a person his identity.  Enough of this crap.  Andrew B. Postema's character was maligned by Reed.  He comes here in good humor and you cast aspersions on him.  Meanwhile, nothing but silence from you about Reed's repeated vile slander in this forum of people.

Just so you can understand the depth of my disgust with what you are doing, I broke my pledge to keep quiet for the week to denounce it.

Andy

Well, no over-reaction there then.

Looks like you were right to return to posting early - clearly there is no need for you to cool off.
