Michael N.,

================
No Ed, I meant "kindness" literally, your example doesn't cut it...

Recently, a student offered this quote from my website, www.NewberryWorkshop.com

"I can't believe how much I've learned from Michael in such a short period of time! I thoroughly enjoy the classes and am incredibly happy with the art I am making under his direction. Michael is a master of his craft, and I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from him. I can't emphasize enough how much I recommend his classes!"

Doesn’t exactly sound like a confession extracted by whinny, bitter, artificial sadist, now does it?

Michael
================

No it doesn't, Michael. And, to be honest, I don't really have a piss-poor opinion of you (as my previous reactionary rants may have suggested). In short, I find you quicker-to-wit than is optimal. Someone who'll stifle just a few more spirits than he catapults -- but that is actually, comparatively, virtuous. As the population-at-large hardly ever catapults any spirit -- you are well above-average in encouraging human progress on planet Earth.

Indeed, you are a net good for the grand purpose of mankind (you are valuable) -- even if you are awful harsh on some, at times. In short, you're always welcome at MY dinner table -- but you're not always welcome to dessert (unless earned). I don't quite perceive of you as an enemy -- but rather as an oft-estranged accomplice.

Your friendship is more valuable to me than is a perpetual rivalry,

Ed

Hi Dean

Can you "hear between the lines"  that many people here are worried that you are in danger?

YOU ARE THE CANDLE  by which we will see this new light.

Remember Edna Millay burning her candle at both ends?            IT didn't last the night.

Be mindful of what you are sacrificing ................Ayn Rand reminds you  "You can't have your cake and eat it too"

We are witnessing your breakthrough from a great distance.   Could you benefit from talking to someone in person?

This site has a number of kindred spirits who have been there, looked into the abyss, and are now INVINCIBLE.

Some of us had someone to hold our hand as we leaned over the edge.

Reach out to someone.              We are all better when we are loved.

Sharon Romagnoli Macdonald,

I wonder, is it danger that I may go crazy, or is it danger that men with white coats will come get me that you are warning me about?

I got a traffic ticket yesterday for driving strait in a right turn lane. I didn't want to wait for about 50 cars to slowly go through the intersection when I could just drive though the empty right turn lane and go strait, by-passing all of the cattle, and getting a break away. SWAT! YOU CAN'T DRIVE FAST, YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN WHAT THE TRAFFIC DIRECTIONAL CONTROL DIRECTS YOU TO DO. YOU MIGHT GET IN AN ACCIDENT AND HURT YOURSELF OR OTHERS! YOU BROKE OUR LAW THAT REDUCES THE CHANCES THAT SOMEONE MIGHT HURT THEMSELVES, ANOTHER PERSON, OR SOMEONE'S PROPERTY. BREAKING THE LAW IS COMMITTING A CRIME. YOU MUST NOW PAY THE PEOPLE 121.50 OR WASTE TIME WATCHING A SAFETY VIDEO OR WASTE TIME GOING TO COURT OR GO TO JAIL OR DIE RIGHT HERE.

Of course, the police that pulled me over agreed that I was being oppressed and that I didn't actually damage anything, but that they were simply doing what they swore to do, their duty to uphold the Law and to give me a ticket. They were very nice guys, I had a nice time chatting with them.

So which option should I take, and why? I'll accept comments both by private and public communication. I'll accept comments in both semi-anonymous and identity-revealing form.

Oh yes, and if I took the court option, should I argue that I didn't actually damage anything, so I shouldn't be punished? Innocent until someone else's property is violated? Or oh-- did I violate the rights of the public property? Well, shouldn't the public property Laws be changed? No more preventative Laws that both prevent people from destroying other's property/negative rights and prevent people from being productive. Let people live!

But then if everyone tried to drive like me, then what would happen? Well then, there would be more accidents! AND people would be able to get to where they want to go WAY FASTER! Instead of having dictating traffic laws, we could have priority traffic laws. Signs would indicate which lanes and roads etc. have priority when. If you get in the way of someone that has priority, then you commit a crime. And if someone did cause an accident, then they would have to pay for the police to come help them out, the court fees, the damage that they caused, etc., all depending on the degree that we are certain the person caused the accident.

Or maybe I'm just sick of being held down by the same laws as everyone else, when I know I'm safe doing things that would be way more dangerous to others. Damn nanny state.

Dean,

I'm one of the ones who's worried about you.  It would be in your best interest to ratchet it down a few notches.

Let me start with your traffic-law rant.  There are two good reasons for traffic laws.  (1) It makes the behavior of others more predictable, thereby reducing accidents.  (2) If you break a traffic law, it gives the police pretext to pull you over and see if you are wanted for anything else.  Believe it or not, this is largely why they pull you over.  People who are wanted for other violations, of laws that EVEN YOU would consider valid, tend NOT to lay low and obey the traffic laws so as not to attract attention to themselves.  No, they tend to ignore the traffic laws as they ignore other laws.

Let's take this out of a legal context:  Can I just ask that you obey the traffic laws out of politeness to other drivers?  Most of us are out there driving within the dashed lines, using our turn signals, stopping at red lights, even when we could forego these things to save time.  But it's a matter of politeness.  And another thing, you are not infallible.  From your rant, I infer that you are the type that sees nothing wrong with running a red light if nobody is coming.  But it IS wrong; the reason is that you are not infallible:  there could be someone coming that you don't see.

Now, on to other things.  I think part of your angst could have to do with the time of year.  April 15 is closing in, it's the time that many of us get fed up with the intrusiveness of the tax system, as well as with the dollar amount they are taking these days.  My husband and I have already had over $37,000 withheld from our paychecks last year, for federal income tax alone, and whoopee, I get to write them a check for another couple thousand on the 15th!  Would it be too much to ask that everyone pay an equal amount?? After all, I don't use MORE government services than poor people do, I use LESS!  Maybe as a first step, the law could be changed so that there's an "Alternative Maximum Tax" instead of "Alternative Minimum Tax."  If you've had, let's say, $20,000 withheld from your salary, they could say you've paid enough already.

So, how much federal tax did they withhold from you this year, Dean?  Less than mine?  Then quit yer bitching.  Yeah, it stinks.  If I could keep that money, in a year and a half I could buy myself a shiny new Lexus convertible.  Damn, it stinks.

Taxes are the coins we throw into the bin in order to ride the tollway of modern life.  It's a lot of coins, too...

That said, would I be better off to shrug?  At this stage, I don't think so.  I wouldn't be able to make nearly as much money in the "cash-only economy".  And there is no way my employer is going to break the law in such an obvious way as to stop withholding income tax from my paychecks.  The reason Atlas hasn't shrugged yet is that he is really strong, and the load is really light, compared to the book.

I know you will read this and think of me as an unprincipled pragmatist, what with my little suggestions for incremental changes to the tax laws that would make them a little less unpleasant.  I don't see myself that way, though.  I understand the principles of a free society, and I understand the proper role of government, and I KNOW that the country we live in bears little resemblance.  But I choose to live my life anyway and not let the looters have too much effect on me.

Maybe I should close with some reasons to be optimistic.  Well, it seems like more and more people around the globe are starting to realize the danger of religious fundamentalism.  We in the United States are starting to understand that Islam is not George Bush's "religion-o-peace" after all.

While we still have Congress scolding businessmen for making a profit, at least the concept of universal government wage and price controls is now seen as ludicrous.  I am old enough to remember Nixon's little experiment in that regard.  I don't think that would be politically feasible anymore; people have learned a LITTLE bit of economics since then.

And as for the strength of Atlas, just look at the technological progress we have made in the past 20 years or so!  It is mind-boggling.  Unfortunately, all this abundance makes it easier for the looters to take a bigger piece, but we can still bear it.

Anyway, Dean, maybe what you need is a little "news holiday."  Just don't read or watch any news for a couple weeks, to give yourself a breather.  Go and do what makes you happy.  There's a strangely-worded quote from "We the Living" that sticks with me because I think it applies to situations such as yours.  It goes something like, "Don't struggle not to be happy; you are."

Keep talking.  You're going to figure this out.  It's all about the REALITY of EACH MOMENT.   I hope that you congratulated yourself on dealing with the police so rationally.  Some other young guys driving a smart car might have been taken in for questioning, etc. etc.

In the meantime, have you lived in the undeveloped world yet?   As you may know,  a different set of problems exists.

Its all about fly control.          House flies can pollute your food. Don't use DDT, cover up your food and keep manure away from your house.
                                                Tse tse flies can give you sleeping sickness. Use DDT, on your screens and bed nets.

Can you see the problems of your modern life in terms of  fly control?   To swat or not to swat?

Here's what I think might be worth investigating.  I'm computer illiterate; but is it possible that your work as a computer programmer is compounding this moral problem?

From my understanding, computers work from an extreme judgemental position................it's ON or OFF...............YES or NO.............CORRECT or INCORRECT.

                                                                                                           Objectivism falls into this scenario.  MORAL or IMMORAL. Judge, and be prepared to be judged!

Humans are imperfect.  We have shades of grey much of the time.  To live, is to hold your nose as you pass by the manure.  Ayn Rand was too hard on herself .  She was too hard on everyone. Look at what she did to Leonard Piekoff.  Look what he's doing now.  We can laugh at Dr. Phil; but answer his question   "HOW'D THAT WORK FOR THEM ?

We are all better when we are loved.  Begin first, with yourself.  We should have learned it in kindergarten.

Keep Shinin' Dean   ,**,

Oh, and another thing, on the traffic violation.  Just pay the fine.  Here's how I look at it.  You don't HAVE TO obey the law.  If you choose not to, you have to pay extra.  So just pay it.  (And don't do it too often, because you don't want to lose your license.) ;-)

Sharon,

Your wrong about computers, and the ON/OFF. Of course, ON/OFF is the most basic relationship, but from simplicity can come ever-compounding complexity. For example, a computer may decide to do all sorts of different things in the following example:
public String saySomething(int stringID) {
String sentence = ""; // nothing

if (stringID==0) {
sentence = "You look beautiful today.";
}
else if (stringID==1) {
sentence = "I like your hair.";
}
else if (stringID==2) {
sentence = "Are you a model?";
}
else if (stringID==-345535) {
sentence = "You look fat.";
}
else if (stringID== ...) {
...
}

return sentence;
}
Notice how its not ON/OFF? Just one input, and tons of outputs.

Now, what if this function could change itself, depending on the inputs and the results of the outputs, and what if whether it continued to exist depended on whether the actions it took were self-generating and self-sustaining, and whether any of its critical components were still functioning, and it could reproduce? Laure Chipman,

Thanks for the advice. Thank you. Thank you.

Sharon,
We are all better when we are loved. Begin first, with yourself. We should have learned it in kindergarten.
Is it acceptable to love some things about myself, and hate other things? And same to others? Isn't it kinda silly to say you love something in whole if you don't love some parts? Or maybe... net love. I currently net love you. I currently net love myself. Dayyaam, do I strive for perfect accuracy of information/knowledge, or what?

Okay Dean

Are you saying that computer work, and using my analogy, Objectivism, is less like a picture done in black and white pontillism (one dot at a time) and more like a painting done in the Chinese style with a fully loaded sharp-pointed brush making grand flourishes as varying pressure is applied to the paper?

ON/OFF, 0/1, exists as relationships between parts of Reality in a computer, it is information, states of parts of Reality, of minor complexity, one relationship, voltage, low or high. But then lets say you have many of these low/highs? Now you have more relationships between parts of Reality, you are looking at more of Reality, its more complex, more information. Do you have two things that can go on/off? Now you have four possible states. Three things? Now you have eight possible states. Four things? Now you have sixteen possible states. How many possible states does a human being's mind have? What does the human mind use to store the states? How does the human mind perform operations? Weights on the inputs of neurons. How does the human mind change the operations it performs? It changes the neurons it connects to and the weights of the inputs and the neurons it connects to for output. How does the human mind store memories? I assume it does simply by storing weights of inputs. Short term memory is the information that your brain is quickly currently acting upon, the pulse firing rate of your neurons. If you want to think clearly on a problem, make sure to empty your short term memory of other things such as TODO lists, distractions, etc. If you feel like your life is threatened, find a safer place to live, because you will be spending too much resources on making sure that you are safe. Maybe its not in your self interest to produce so much value? Because then your life is really in danger, others will want to come take it from you at any cost.

Is the human mind limited? Yes, to a degree, but of course we can always improve our mind-- even physically as medical technology and neural-computer interface technology and computer technology improves. How capable is my mind at discovering relationships between parts of reality? Incredibly capable.

Some people use their memory to store past events, quotes, etc. I don't do this. I use almost all of my memory to store relationships and interactions between parts of reality that actually have some sort of impact on my life. I don't even notice things that others pay attention to, it interests them, but its boring to me because I predict most everything that will happen or I find that I won't get any useful information out of paying attention to it.

Anyways, I really should get back to work. Nice chatting. : )

Sharon, I am saying that as computer technology develops, computers yes, are becoming more like the paintings. How many states can your computer go into with 1Gig memory and 250Gig hard drive and 20Gig 64bit instructions per second and 1Meg CPU secondary cache, connected to all of its I/O devices and other simular computers? And what if the software is Raseim-Ralima?

> Dr. Civil...insults...you...choose to use them yourself [WSS, Post 93]

Personal insult, personal criticism?...not the same thing.

An insult is when you attack a person's motives or character or some aspect of him which is not relevant (you're fat) or untrue or unknowable (you're evil, you're an evader). Being civil and non-insulting doesn't mean you can't criticize someone for a trait inappropriate to a discussion or context (not letting others speak, being illogical, being rationalistic). William, you may not be aware of the context. But, having emphasized civility over and over, whenever I actually criticize someone, I get someone like you (normally it is the boiling mad, resentful person I've dared to criticize) who pounces and says "hah! you hypocrite...you are being insulting, patronizing, personal, condescending."

They have an intrinsicist view of what an insult is, what a criticism is. An "insult" is not that you -feel- insulted or "sniped" at or "bad mouthed" (two more imprecise, slanted, and emotionalist terms for something other than the facts).

I'm tired of making these basic points, but one more time:

1. No one is entitled to be free from criticism for his ideas, his thinking methods, his inappropriate behavior when they are part of the debate or affect the quality of the debate.
2. He is not entitled to prevent others from criticizing by saying it is uncivil or offends him.
3. He is required to process the criticism objectively and respond to it on its merits.
4. Objectivists make all kinds of mistakes of attitude, behavior, social skills within this movement. They need to be -strongly and repeatedly criticized- for them. Else they and bystanders will never learn and they will damage our movement enormously.
5. Civility means not being insulting. It doesn't mean not being critical.

Aren't you a package deal?  This is where forgiveness enters the picture.  We all need it, none of us is perfect, yet.    Jesus tried it and was crucified. DPHQ  (dr.phil's question).

He did draw our attention to a new idea for his time,  FORGIVENESS.  Interesting that we have this conversation during lent.  hmm?  Accept the superiority of YOUR mind and take a page out of Jesus' book.      "forgive them father for they know not what they do".

We are the sum of our experiences Dean, you have been gifted with a magnificent brain; and somehow you have been nurtured (in ways that others have not) in an environment that permitted you to take advantage of opportunities that have produced the intellectually gifted person you are today.

Your moral outrage  is creating a cognitive dissonance; but you are also suffering from a lack of benevolence toward yourself.  Get out your baby pictures and remind yourself of how loved and treasured you were.  Can you go home this weekend and wrap your arms around your mother?   Do you need to forgive her too?

If I'm out of line Dean, forgive me.  I'm just speaking sincerely, using the ideas and feelings that your writing has triggered in my own mind and heart.
