Thanks for opening this thread, Ted. I'm a big fan of BookTV and have in on almost all of the time on the week ends, but it's a bit hit and miss actually viewing the items I'm interested in.

Ted -- Thanks for the Book TV link! I saw about two hours of the Hitchens interview--excellent!--and it looks like I can watch the rest online.

Coming to our Atlas Shrugged 50th Anniversary Celebration on Oct. 6 in DC?

Unfortunately, personal circumstances (no, not the terms of my parole) make it difficult for me to travel, and I know that I will not be able to attend the conference. I am happy to know that the BOOK TV alerts are valued. I think Sam was right that this particular episode was a bit taxing on the attention given its pace. The call-in questions weren't the best, and the interviewer was "adequate," but he stuck to his script, and didn't have Hitchens follow up on digressions which I would have pursued had I done the questioning. I have watched the entire show in three portions. It is not going to teach anything new to an Objectivist, but it certainly is of interest to those who are Hitchens fans in any case. And it is fascinating to see a man who labors so diligently to maintain his intellectual integrity, to say exactly what he means, and to answer exactly the question he is asked, if indeed it is a question.

And write, call or email ABC thereafter in his praise. (John's praise, that is. You can just sanction Sam to praise him.)

The Al Qaeda Reader, Raymond Ibrahim

Get the scoop on Al Qaeda in their own words. I own this book, it debunks Ron-Paulist views that if we weren't there they wouldn't attack us. The book is a must read.

Airing:

Saturday, September 15, at 9:00 PM
Sunday, September 16, at 6:00 PM
Sunday, September 16, at 9:00 PM

Giving, Bill Clinton

This thief, who was one of the least charitable of presidents - with his own money - has apparently discovered altruism.

Outrage, Dick Morris

This is Morris's screed against corporate greed.

I'm not recommending these titles, unless you are into dark humor.

I know you're being sarcastic but, in a larger view, sanctions for posting trivial postings devalues those items that the posters have put a lot of effort into and inspire others.

I don't know if others have the same feeling that I do but somehow anonymous sanctions seem more appropriate and meaningful.

Also, members of this forum have accumulated a lot of Atlas points. If I want to sanction something I can't control how many points I give ... it's always five. If you wanted to give me a point for this posting, that'd be OK, but 5 definitely is too many. It's un-earned and patronizing.

Well, we seem to have a minor difference of opinion. I find helpful postings and good faith efforts to be worthy of sanctions. I also find that anonymous sanctions are often used to second mere insults or to back up mere assertions with no further arguments added.

I disagree with the argument that my sanction cheapens yours - they are not currency. But I do see the reasonability of wishing one could sanction with less than one's full standing. In any case, my sanctions are always sincerely meant and never patronizing. You made the effort, you offered value, you deserve the sanction.

I made a huge mistake, Morris's OUTRAGE speech on BOOKTV was excellent. It is too late to see it aired live, but follow the link above for a vague description. If I see that it is airing again, I'll post.

I concur about Morris. He has a lot of insight, especially as a strategist. He's seen regularly on The O'Reilly Factor.

Another chance to view the former head of the fed:

Alan Greenspan, The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World
In an event at George Washington University in Washington, DC, Alan Greenspan talks about his new memoir. In the book, Mr. Greenspan shares reflections on his life and on his tenure as Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board from 1987 to 2006.
(Saturday 7 PM, Sunday 12 AM, 9 AM and 11 PM ET)

Note the times quoted are ET.

Maybe this time he'll say more about Rand/gold/Objectivism.

Laura Ingraham "Power to the People" 9-10:15AM, 10-11:15PM Sunday 30 September

I have only listened to a few of her radio shows, and she is obviously a Christian conservative but a very smart and entertaining one at that.

Norman Podhoretz "World War IV" Sunday, September 30, 6PM, 9PM & Monday, October 1, 12AM, 3AM (1hr)

I believe Podhoretz is a Neocon, so that makes two potential bugbears in a row, but again, He is a rather intelligent speaker and this is a rather topical topic.
