| | Erica: You're correct about B5. It did just barely finish the planned story arc. However, it was actually getting more interesting than ever at that point in many respects, with the civil war among humans, etc., but sci-fi cut their budget significantly, which forced Strazinsky to cut salaries and so Claudia Christian quit, which I thought was a stupid move for her and them, and I was proven correct. (What has she done since?) On SciFi, the show quickly went downhill.
Dark Angel, however, is my all-time fave. It had the best, almost 100% hard-science plots, the strongest and most interesting characters, and both ROFL humor and intense moral dilemnas in every episode. And I'm NOT a big Alba fan. It also had a definite story arc which got totally trashed by the network. The last 1.5 hour special episode is perhaps the most intense TV experience I've ever had.
So they replaced DA with Firefly, and I almost didn't watch it, I was so totally pissed off. However, Firefly was almost as good as DA... and also had a definite story arc, as evinced in the movie "Serenity," which is playing here in the OC this Wednesday, BTW at 7:30 at the art theater near Bristol and Sunflower, for those in the area. Since I've only seen it five or six times, I will definitely be there.
Both DA and FF had the problem that they challenged real taboos and DA, especially, made people think about things that are typically taken for granted. It shoved those issues on the main burner and then into the faces of the viewers, and people who like that kind of intensity loved it, while the couch potatos turned to something more likely to put them to sleep.
