We don't get our rights because we're gays, or women, or minorities. We get our rights from our Creator as individuals. So every individual should be treated the same way.

The most important element of a free society, where individual rights are held in the highest esteem, is the rejection of the initiation of violence. All initiation of force is a violation of someone else's rights, whether initiated by an individual or the state, for the benefit of an individual or group of individuals, even if it's supposed to be for the benefit of another individual or group of individuals. Legitimate use of violence can only be that which is required in self-defense.

The worth of a state, in the long run, is the worth of the individuals composing it. And a state which postpones the interest of their mental expansion and elevation to a little more of an administrative skill, of that semblance of which practice gives in the details of business, a state which dwarves its men in order that they may be more docile instruments in it’s hands, even for beneficial purposes, will find that with small men no great thing can really be accomplished, and that the perfection of machinery to which it has sacrificed everything will in the end avail it nothing. For want of the vital power, which in order that the machine might work more smoothly, it has preferred to banish.

It is an ironic truth that those who seek to create systems which most assume the perfectibility of humans end up building the systems which are most soul destroying and most rigid, systems that rot from within until like great creaking rotten oak trees they collapse on top of themselves leaving a sour smell and decay. We saw it happen in 1989 with the astonishing fall of the USSR. Conversely, those systems which best take into account the complex, frail, brilliance of human nature and build in flexibility, checks and balances, and tolerance tend to survive beyond all hopes.

So here's what I don't understand: if profit is supreme, why doesn't a company like General Motors sell crack? Crack is a very profitable commodity. For every pound of cocaine that is transformed into crack, a dealer stands to make a profit of $45,000. The dealer profit on a two-thousand-pound car is less than $2,000. Crack is also safer to use than automobiles. Each year, 40,000 people die in car accidents. Crack, on the other hand, according to the government's own statistics, kills only a few hundred people a year. And it doesn't pollute.

Just for the record, WMD was never my rationale. As I've said on many occasions, when it comes to toppling dictators, there's no such thing as an "illegitimate" rationale. In his obstruction of U.N. weapons inspectors, Saddam certainly acted as if he had WMD and, in his "trade" missions to Niger (principal exports: uranium, goats, cowpeas, and onions), as if he were eager to acquire more. There's something to be said for taking a chap at his word.

The fundamentalist believes that we believe in nothing. In his world-view, he has his absolute certainties, while we are sunk in sybartic indulgences. To prove him wrong, we must first know that he is wrong. We must agree on what matters: kissing in public places, bacon sandwiches, disagreement, cutting-edge fashion, literature, generosity, water, a more equitable distribution of the world's resources, movies, music, freedom of thought, beauty, love. These will be our weapons.

The friendliness and charity of our countrymen can always be relied upon to relieve their fellow citizens in misfortune. This has been repeatedly and quite lately demonstrated. Federal aid in such cases encourages the expectation of paternal care on the part of the Government and weakens the sturdiness of our national character, while it prevents the indulgence among our people of that kindly sentiment and conduct which strengthens the bonds of a common brotherhood.

I do agree Muslim Americans are just as law abiding and patriotic as most others bla bla bla.

But can we stop pretending there is absolutely NOTHING intrinsic to Islam that promotes fanatical zealotry, terrorism, and violence against women?

Can we stop pretending that what young Muslim boys are learning in Madrasahs of Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan is good old fahsioned "love thy neighbor" theology?

Can we stop ignoring the fact that the subjugation of women is a scripturally based tradition?

Can we ignore the fact that Islam has become a religion bankrupt of intellectualism?

Can we ignore the fact that any public figure who voices these concerns faces death threats?

Say what you want about Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and the rest of the whackjob religious right, but if you criticize them on TV, one does not typically need to worry about being shiskabobbed by a motorcycle riding zealot.
